Shining a Light on Sustainability
Today is International Museum Day, and this year’s theme is Museums for a sustainable society. Several changes during renovation will make the Spencer Museum of Art more sustainable, including upgrades to lighting systems.
Renovated areas of the Museum will upgrade from incandescent to LED lighting. This change will improve energy efficiency, as LED lights can produce 95 lumens per watt, compared with an average of 9 lumens per watt in incandescent bulbs. LED lights also last thousands of hours longer than incandescent lights, and give off less heat.
Spencer Exhibition Designer Richard Klocke said the new LED systems will significantly reduce the amount of time necessary for lighting an exhibition and will require much less room to store when not in use.
